Hwy 30 Extension

Thursday, August 14, 2008

Today approximately 25 Kahnawake community members and members of Kahnawake's Mohawk Traditional Council placed a No Trespassing sign where the Quebec government has begun development for the extension of Highway 30 between St. Constant and Chateauguay.

Highway 30 extension is opposed by Kahnawake community members, St. Constant citizens and local farmers. Many local residents issued strong words of encouragement and support for the Kahnawakeron:non. The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake, an Indian Act band council, had already gave the go ahead to Quebec in exchange for other lands. Community members point to the fact that their has been no consultation regarding the offer, the offer is verbal, Kahnawake will lose vital adjacent farm land and the deal with the MCK has not been explained.

They expect the sign to be taken down and have not yet stated if their will be any actions if this happens.

More info as it happens. Video available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrRIucDNezo
